The village of Maçanet de Cabrenys is one of the biggest municipalities in the Alt Empordà. It can be found in a valley at the foot of the Salines mountains. The highgest points terminate in the extrem north of the municipality of Maçanet which are: El roc de la Campana (1398 m), el roc de Frausa (1445m) and el puig de les Salines (1331).

In the middle of the main village square there is an iron bar belonging to Roldan, wich was placed in 1834. He was a hero fighting against the Arabs. Once this land was conquered he threw the bar and said "There where the bar will land, Maçanet de Cabrenys will be"
Mare de Déu de les Salines
Mare de Déu de les Salines is a sanctuary located in the mountain at 1100m height. Accesible by a forest path of 11kms. Build in 1271 by parishioners of Maçanet. The present chapel was altered during XVII century.
Center of village.
The main church is Sant Marti de Cabrenys of late romanesque period of the second half of XII century. Maçanet was a fortified village and there are still some historical remains. Some of those remains can still be found, as for example the ancient prison and the little chapel Sant Sebastia from XVII century.
The neighborhood of Els Vilars located 6 kms south-east from Maçanet. There is a chapel from pre-Romanesque period build in the year 954.
